Hundreds of children who had witnessed a blast in Afghanistan’s Baghlan city last November are still traumatised, suffering from paranoia, dizziness, stress and sleeping disorders. Health experts are of the view that children in the conflict-affected country are at risk of suffering deep scars of war.

When a dalit widow was appointed as cook in a government-run school in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, no one was ready to eat the food cooked and served by her. Everyone conspired to sack her and saw to it that she was never reinstated.

La Federazione Internazionale Terre des Hommes (TDHIF) ha presentato oggi a Bruxelles uno studio sulla responsabilità etica dei Paesi riceventi le adozioni internazionali che confronta le leggi e le procedure di sei Paesi europei: Italia, Francia, Germania, Norvegia, Spagna e Svizzera. In Italia si è passati dai 346 minori stranieri adottati del 2000 ai 2.840 del 2005, l'incremento più elevato tra i 6 Paesi esaminati nello studio. Terre des Hommes chiede alla Commissione Europea di salvaguardare i diritti del bambino adottato e dei genitori adottivi incoraggiando tutti gli stati membri dell'UE a partecipare a un "Codice di buone pratiche".

To boost its corporate social responsibility work, GAIL India Ltd has launched an e-Shiksha programme for rural children at some of its plants in north and central India. Started with an investment of INR 6.3 million, the mobile centres will have buses equipped with laptops to teach children computer basics in local languages.

According to a new Wealth and Survival Index, India is one of the worst performers in cutting child mortality, given its national wealth. The new report by Save the Children UK says even the poorest of countries can attain child survival if they pursue the right policies.

Pneumonia has taken epidemic proportions in Afghanistan, where over 170,000 patients have been diagnosed with the disease in past one month. Food insecurity, lack of awareness and unhygienic conditions are only adding to the problems of people, who are facing the harshest winter in many years.

Occorrono 856 milioni di dollari per l'assistenza a donne e bambini in 39 Paesi colpiti da crisi umanitarie. E' l'appello lanciato nei giorni scorsi dall'Unicef presentando il 'Humanitarian Action Report' - il rapporto annuale sui paesi in emergenza. "Come effetto della crisi in Kenya, 300mila persone sono state costrette ad abbandonare le loro case e rifugiarsi in campi di accoglienza: 150mila sono bambini, di cui 80mila hanno meno di 5 anni. In Ciad la situazione è meno chiara, ma si stima che 30mila delle 52mila persone fuggite dal paese siano a rischio e richiedano immediata assistenza" - ha dichiarato Hilde Johnson, Vice-direttore dell'Unicef ricordando le recenti crisi. Ieri l'Unicef ha lanciato un ulteriore appello: per salvare la vita di 90mila bambini somali urgono nelle prossime due settimane 6 milioni di dollari.

In many of the recent suicide attacks in Pakistan, children have been used as suicide bombers or fidayeens. According to a study done by a Lahore-based NGO, seminaries are indoctrinating impressionable minds with fanatical teachings.

Lähes 50 miljoonaa lasta jää vuosittain rekisteröimättä. Ilman syntymätodistusta lapsia ei virallisesti ole olemassa: heillä ei ole kansalaisoikeuksia. Omat nimet kirjoissa -kampanjalla Plan muistuttaa, että syntymärekisteröinti on jokaisen lapsen ihmisoikeus.

Lasten näkymätön hätä jää usein huomaamatta niin lahjoittajilta kuin medialtakin, Unicef huomauttaa uudessa selvityksessään maailman hätäavun tarpeesta. Järjestö arvioi tarvitsevansa tänä vuonna 591 miljoonaa euroa naisten ja lasten auttamiseksi 39 kriisissä ympäri maailmaa.

Suomalaisen kouluruokailun 60. juhlavuoden kunniaksi oppilaitokset ympäri Suomen voivat tulla mukaan kattamaan koulupöydän Etiopian kyläkoulujen lapsille. Keräysvarat käytetään koulujen rakentamiseen ja ylläpitämiseen Etelä-Etiopiassa Alaban, Ankoberin, Baso Liben, Chehan ja Konson kunnissa.
